The Truth Behind the Movie "The Secret"

"Have you seen The Secret?" is the new buzz question being asked by many excited fans of the movie. News is traveling about the potential of what our minds can do. People are applying the principles that are being preached in the movie and manifesting the unimaginable. Whether we are seeking better health, stronger relationships, or more money, the movie "The Secret" demonstrates how powerful our thoughts are and how reality is created. The premise of the movie is that we all are creating our reality by how we direct our thoughts. Whatever we focus on the most is what we will experience. If we expend energy on what it is that we do not want, we will experience more of what it is we do not want. Directing our awareness toward what it is we do want will be the impetus for us to experience unlimited possibilities.

However, these concepts are not a secret, nor are they new perspectives. The message in the movie corroborates beliefs that have been known and taught for thousands of years by many ancient peoples including Hindus, Taoists, Babylonians, and early mystical Christians. This universal belief has been an intangible, mysterious force used for healing, creativity, and faith amongst the ancient ones. Many knew about this phenomenon, but only a selective group was able to administer the powers through healing or manifest wondrous things through belief. In our culture today, the masses continue to believe that one needs special attainment to attract miracles to one's life and that we are all victims of our circumstances. Some people believe in this higher power but still perseverate about things they do not want. They still do not understand the "law of attraction" or the core emotions which construct their perceptions.

The intention here is not to critique the movie, "The Secret," but to help elucidate salient points in regards to negative cognitions and to illustrate how we all have core emotions that drive these thoughts. In the movie, they postulate that positive affirmations can override negative beliefs. If a person’s beliefs are strong or flexible enough to completely support a positive affirmation, then there is a chance that he can change a negative belief. However, if a person’s emotional belief system is not able support a positive affirmation then he will experience the same negative perceptions and outcome. If a person has been retraumatized by similar experiences multiple times, this will not only reinforce his belief but it will actually create a neural pathway (brain activity) to match his experience. In other words, through past experiences we develop mental representations that are usually projected as working models for the future.

Our present conscious awareness is the accumulation of old experiences, traumatic events, our parents’ beliefs and behaviors, and the collective consciousness of our environment. In addition to living life through past conditioning, we create social microcosms that support and reinforce our survival patterns. Like attracts like, so more than likely we are surrounded by friends, acquaintances, or coworkers who talk about the same issues or feelings of victimization. We end up enabling each other by subscribing to these beliefs.

Most of us are not experiencing the here-and-now because it is tainted with holographic images of past experiences and emotions. Those emotions are the rudimentary backbone of our perceptions and recurring themes which we continue to recreate. For example, if a person wants to attract an ideal partner but subconsciously she feels unlovable, there is a good chance she will either attract no one or an unemotional partner. If a person ambitiously desires financial freedom yet feels unworthy, it will be difficult for him to succeed in life. Either of these persons may have endured multiple experiences of feeling rejected or abandoned such as being born a premature baby and put in a incubator without human contact for several weeks, having his or her parents divorce during adolescence, or having a partner commit adultery.

Most of us have been raised with dualistic perspectives. We are rewarded for doing something good and punished for doing something bad. Things either are threatening or non-threatening. This limited perspective on how we perceive the world is usually what causes suppression and then eventually repression. Because we do not want to be ostracized from others for expressing our “truths,” we try to blend in with the “norms” and invalidate ourselves. Feeling angry, sad, hopeless, or fearful is not "bad or good" according to how our psyche and soul interpret experiences. Emotions, whatever they might be, are opportunities for us to learn about our "selves" and to evolve as spiritual beings. It is our resistance to our experiences and emotions that usually causes stress and eventually repressed, subconscious fear. Unresolved issues are the precursors for deep-rooted, negative beliefs and perceptions.

If a person can identify the source of an issue and hopefully reach a place of acceptance and understanding, this will help alleviate the emotional charge that fuels negative beliefs, including self-deprecating thoughts. If a person wants to attract a better, higher-paying job but his core feeling is that he does not deserve better, he should process this until he experiences emotional freedom in regards to the distorted perception. This means that not only does he know his negative cognition is irrational but that he also feels energetically that a change or miracle could happen. When we want something to change, our belief is not as important when compared to our convictions and values. Secondly, he should create two affirmations such as: 1) I am worthy of endless love and potential. 2) My new job pays me generously and I am living my dreams.

If what we want is in alignment with our hearts without the hindrance of unresolved issues and distorted beliefs, the extraordinary can happen. Conscious creating and manifesting becomes more powerful and fulfilling when one's values benefit others. The secret behind "The Secret" is to become a great, loving giver and to also address our emotional bodies. The act of giving is the impetus that creates channels for manifestations and for receiving. You must be able to give to receive. We are not talking about materialistic things but the act itself of sending a prayer, giving love or a hug. Since we are all intertwined, these acts of giving open up new possibilities in ourselves.

If we fall unconditionally in love with others, ourselves, and what it is that we want for one second, the quantum field will take care of the rest. We go to sleep knowing that the sun will rise. This is no different once you start witnessing the unimaginable and come to a place of "knowingness." Sometimes it is not about whether a miracle is going go to happen, but rather do you have the capacity to recognize it. Believing it, seeing it, and experiencing it takes practice and discipline.
