| FAQs before setting an appointment with Dr. Ray |
FAQs for setting up an appointment with Dr. Ray
Q. How do I set up an appointment?
A. Just give me a call. I offer a free initial phone consultation to answer any questions that are not provided on the website. This will give you the opportunity to discuss what it is you want to work on and to see if therapy/coaching could help.
Q. How does a typical session work?
A. The sessions are about gathering information including history of the presenting problem. As we work through issues, symptoms/issues are often alleviated or resolved. This could happen during our session or afterwards. I treat each session uniquely as if I am meeting you for the first time.
Q. What techniques would you use and how would you work with me?
A. Every client is unique and requires different needs. Techniques are like tools. I would not use a hammer on a screw. My training and background allows me to be creative and flexible in order to help a wide variety of clients. I customize the sessions according to your needs.
Q. What is your success rate?
A. Majority of my clients who are dedicated to their healing process experience significant, positive changes. Some clients stop in the middle of the process because they are not ready. Some clients are not serious or do want to take responsibility for their changes. The clients who are open, receptive, and actively participate in the process always experience positive results. Effective therapy/coaching is contingent on the collaboration of the client and his/her willingness to persevere.
Q. Would if I cannot be hypnotized?
A. Everyone can be hypnotized. When most people think about hypnosis, they think about what is depicted in films and/or television where the person is completely unconscious and sometimes out of control. You are always in control during the sessions. Whenever you move from an outward perception to an inner awareness, you enter trance. It is a state of mindfulness that can happen when your eyes are open. There are array of techniques that induce trance.
Note: Remember that hypnosis is not the only technique I use. There are many techniques I can use to help you achieve your goals.
Q. How will I feel after a session?
A. Most clients feel relaxed, inspired, motivated, and/or more grounded after a session. However, sometimes clients feel pensive and/or exhausted because the issues they were working on were traumatic. I never allow a client to leave a session disoriented or experiencing intense emotional charge. Some times a client will feel much better or more emotional a few days later because they are processing and integrating the session. Some times in order to break negative patterns, a client must process challenging experiences. The goal is for the client to feel empowered and to overcome any negative beliefs or feelings that might be negatively influencing his or her life.
Q. How long is a typical session?
A. The sessions are 75-90 minutes. I feel that people need time to unwind. I give the extra 15-minute window in case the session calls for it and to not end the process abruptly. Traditional therapy is usually 50-minutes and ends exactly on time regardless of whether a client is experiencing strong emotional charge. I make sure my clients are grounded before they leave. Many times I will end the session with a meditation.
Q. How many sessions will I need?
A. It is impossible to give you an answer. The human psyche is complex and embodies a multitude of variables that make this question difficult to answer. Many clients come for one issue but realize after a few sessions they appreciate the benefits and sometimes have more issues to work out. I have seen positive results in one session. On an average I see clients 3-15 times. Sometimes clients come back for periodic tune-ups or when they are facing challenges again. Every client is unique. Some are more interested in treating the symptoms and experiencing immediate results, whereas some are more interested in addressing the source and seeking spiritual alignment.
Q. What if our spiritual beliefs differ?
A. Our spiritual beliefs do not need to be parallel in order for you to experience positive results. I never impose my spiritual views on my clients. Most of the time our beliefs are more in alignment than we think. Many times it is just the terminology or how we perceive information that is different. All people want to arrive to a place of healing and clarity. The process is about YOU and not my beliefs.
Q. What are the differences between counseling and coaching?
A. Counseling is usually centered in finding ways to change thoughts, feelings, and behavior. The treatment goals can involve an increased sense of well-being, relationship building, improving communication levels, and changing behavior patterns. Resolving conflict from the past may be the only way to progress forward. Once individuals are able to move through past- related issues, the focus becomes on the present and the future.
Coaching involves more of an equal partnership between coach and client -- a process of inquiry that empowers clients to reconnect with their own inner wisdom, to find their own answers and to rediscover powerful moments of choice where self- transformation occurs. It creates a bridge from where you are, to where you want to be in your life. Coaching is more goal-oriented.
Q. Are your services covered by health insurance?
A. I do not take health insurance. Most insurance companies would not cover the majority of the modalities that I use or the way I conduct therapy. Due to regulations, time constraints (limited office visits), and what insurance companies will or will not cover, I do not accept health insurance. The therapy I provide is alternative. This allows us to work together more creatively and freely to accommodate your needs.
