Are you experiencing no improvement, clarity, or insight with your current therapist? Traditional talk-therapies primarily focus on the process rather than on results. However, if you desire to experience new changes/solutions, the techniques I use are aimed toward positive changes in your consciousness/life.

I use an alternative approach to working through challenges. Unlike many western approaches of being diagnosed with a clinical disorder or being prescribed medication, I see “you” as a whole person and believe that most symptoms/behaviors can subside by addressing the subconscious mind.

Talking about the problems and uncovering the psychological reasons behind how a problem manifested is only the first step in developing positive changes. I work to resolve the emotional charge that drive these problems so a client actually feels better and is able to change her behavior. I believe that there is a spiritual awakening to healing that a client must experience to feel complete resolution.

The duration of treatment is usually brief compared to traditional talk-therapies. This saves time, money, and energy. Secondly, you are coming to me for help to feel better and see new positive changes in your life. I expect to see those changes, even if they are subtle, within a brief period.

I use a three-stage protocol: past, present, and future to produce long-term resolution. A client usually comes into therapy with a presenting problem. I address the current problem along with its roots. I also help clients to incorporate new positive tools to handle the future in a healthier and more positive way. My three-stage protocol creates long lasting results that put you in control of your life. I guide my clients to be independent and empowered through the process. I provide free audio CDs, DVDs, and additional information and techniques as part of post-treatment.

I have had success with clients who could be considered more challenging. Some clients put up walls, resistance, and other defenses that would stifle most practitioners. I am always able to find creative ways to subdue defenses and resistance and use them in ways that are productive in therapy. I’ve learned many techniques to help attain your goals.

The environment where you unravel your feelings should feel safe. My office and location has a cozy and safe atmosphere. It has a non-clinical feeling to it and is close to a park and the beach in Santa Monica. Finding parking is usually easy.

My business hours are Monday – Friday 10am to 9pm and alternative Saturdays 10am to 3pm. These hours are set up to accommodate any schedule.

Holiday Depression and Tips

Why do people experience holiday depression? Why do cardiac problems spike during the holidays? Why is sobriety more difficult during the winter months?

Holiday depression is common in our culture. The holidays seem to evoke emotional discord in many of us. Whether it’s due to financial stress, interpersonal relationship issues, or past disturbing experiences, there are alternatives to attract better holidays. Many people suppress these challenges because they have come to believe that this stress only happens 1-3 months out of the year. Is there a better solution?

There is a story before another story as to why it is you might dislike the holidays. You might blame your father because of his drinking during Christmas. However, his father was depressed and angry around the holidays too. And now you are challenging to be around too because of this family history. Maybe your parents fought a lot during this time of the year because work slowed down for your father. A family member might have passed away or you had a lover break your heart during the winter months.

Holiday depression might be a family theme. It is important to recognize that many families pass on their cognitive blueprints of their human drama during the holidays. The story that you use to convince yourself that the holidays suck today is entangled with past drama and by confusion from which you have been taught.

You still have the choice to choose how you would like to feel regardless of history. Your feelings and experiences do not have to be contingent on whether Uncle Ernie gets drunk again this year or if you receive that Christmas bonus. You wouldn’t enter an important business meeting with a fatalistic mindset if you wanted to achieve your goal. You wouldn’t visualize yourself losing a basketball game if you enjoy winning. You wouldn’t imagine the worse case scenario on an audition for a casting call.

Here are some suggestions to effectively approach the holidays for a better outcome:

• Define for yourself how you would like the holidays to be for you without past influences or others’ feedback. Create your own holiday and celebration that better serves your family, friends, and your own needs.

• Send love to the person or family member you are having challenges with. Envision him/her having a wonderful experience and smiling. Visualize yourself feeling happy. See yourself effortlessly connecting to your loving essence even if other people seem unhappy.

• Create a hypnotic cue that reconnects you to happiness. For example, you could wear a rubber band and snap yourself when you feel yourself becoming emotionally triggered. You can keep a rock or lucky charm to reminds you of love in your pocket for you to hold while you are communicating with a difficult person.

• Write out a positive and loving script detailing exactly how you envision this upcoming holiday. Make sure it is in the past tense as if you experienced it already. Be has as vivid as possible to connect the experience to your senses. Note: Do not write a script stating you will not experience depression this holiday. Focus on what you do want, not what you don’t. The subconscious mind doesn’t understand a negative.

• Maybe volunteer at a homeless shelter or place where you can help those who are struggling.

• Try to only connect with those who support and accept you. Only engage in gatherings, parties, or events that are alignment with your heart.

• Self-care is important. This year you could be frugal with friends and family and splurge on yourself such as buying yourself a spa treatment or going away on a vacation by yourself or with a fun companion.

• Go on a healing retreat. This could be the best time to go because you might be vulnerable and more sensitive. Instead of celebrating the holidays celebrate YOU.

There are many creative ways to experience the holidays with joy. You do not need to call it the holidays if that works better for you. Much of nature goes into hibernation or becomes dormant. The days are shorter and it is cooler. The Taoist suggests rest and not overexerting yourself. This is the time when yin/feminine/moon dominates yang/masculine/sun. It is the perfect time for processing and conserving energy.

The holidays are derived from ancient customs. It was a time for celebration such as for agriculture, the sun, rejuvenation, rebirth, and honoring the season. Holiday depression was probably unusual in ancient times. The holidays today are heavily based on consumerism, vacation time, end of a work quarter, or trying to please your sweetheart or family. Presents used to be tiny and were tied to the Christmas tree. Today, some person’s present is parked in the driveway. Be creative this year and reach deeper inside yourself without being distracted by the chaos of the collective unconscious.

Ray Doktor, Psy. D. is a clinical hypnotherapist, past-life therapist, spiritual counselor, PSYCH-K facilitator, intuitive healer, and transformational life coach. What is hypnotherapy?


When you hear the word “Hypnosis”, you might think of mind control. Most misconceptions about hypnosis have been created by stage hypnotists who get a participant from the audience to bark like a dog or by movies where it is a tool of vampires, evil doctors or criminals.

Hypnosis works with the power of the subconscious mind to change habits and behaviors. The subconscious mind is considered to be the source or root of many of our behaviors, emotions, attitudes, and motivations. Dr. Ray utilizes hypnotherapy in conjunction with other tools to access the subconscious mind to create improvements in your life.

Being hypnotized is like being in a trance or a special state of the mind in which the body is relaxed and the mind is able to pay attention to inner experiences without criticism or judgment. During hypnotherapy sessions, clients remain completely aware of everything that is going on. In fact many people experience a hyper-awareness where sensations are perceived enriched and vivid. The ability to visualize and imagine is enhanced. Deep relaxation is common. The use of hypnosis could elicit memories of past events which may or may not be literally true. The goal in hypnotherapy is not to verify truth or facts, but help bring a client in touch with better feelings and insight.

Hypnosis is not mind control. No one under hypnosis can be induced to do anything against his or her will. Whatever moral and ethical codes you hold in a normal waking state will still be in place under hypnosis. You will remember everything you experienced. Dr. Ray is a hypnotherapist who always checks in with you during the process to make sure you feel safe.
